Today we tried coffee cupping for the first time to see if we could detect flavor notes of different beans that I roasted yesterday, 2/11/23. I'm looking forward to trying this again after learning a few things not to do with cupping. First, we should've allowed ourselves more time for the whole process. We kind of rushed it, so I'm not sure we got the most out of the experience.
Second, I would probably roast maybe 3-4 different beans instead of 6 different beans. On that note, I roasted 6 different origins, but maybe four out of the 6 beans roasted had gone through a honey process, which I need to read more about, but to my knowledge, this should add a sweeter note to the coffee.
Finally, I would like to do light roast vs. dark roast. I roasted these 6 different beans all about the same (well into 1st crack but before they can reach second crack) because that is my roasting preference for beans I consume, but I think it would've been fun to try and taste the difference in a light roast vs. a dark roast in this tasting scenario.
As far as the actual tasting, Caleb & I both tried to recognize whether the beans were bitter, sour, sweet, & we tried to pay attention to actual flavor. We did pick up a lot of sour (acidic) notes, and a few bitter. One of the beans smelled floral to me but didn't taste floral. Another tasted very earthy, and this was my least favorite bean out of the mix. Most of them tasted about the same to both of us, and that's why I definitely want to try it differently next time because it would be cool to be able to pick up a noticeable difference in flavor from bean to bean.
We watched a video from James Hoffman on YouTube where he then brewed the hosts favorite bean from the tasting 3 different ways so the host could decide his favorite way to enjoy coffee. I wanted us to try our favorite beans as a pour over, an espresso, and then a latte or cappuccino so we could get the whole experience. I'll definitely want to leave more time for this the next time we try it.
This was our first try, and we are very much beginners at this, so I'm sure there's several things we didn't do "correctly", but it was still pretty fun to try.
